What is SEO?

"SEO" stands for search engine optimization.  The goal of this process is to lead more traffic to your website via search engines like Google, Bing, etc.  Adding a title tag, meta description, and keywords for each page correlates with how your site is indexed and ranked by these search engines.

  • Title tag: The title tag is displayed as the site's headline in search engine results and is also displayed as the page title at the top of your browser window.
  • Meta description: The description is displayed below the website's headline in search engine results and serves as a preview of what the page contains/offers to visitors.
  • Keywords: Adding keywords to your metadata may help with how your site is ranked and also ensures the page is indexed with the correct search results.

Below is an example of the title and description of a website's page on Google.

It is important your site's metadata is relevant and updated regularly.  If you use the website that comes with your BookingKoala account, you can use the website and theme builder to add this data to each page.

Adding and Editing Metadata

To begin adding or updating your site's metadata, please go to:

Settings > Design Forms & Website > Website Builder & Themes

Click on the orange "Customize Theme" button to open the website and theme editor.

Once inside the website and theme builder, click on the "Page" menu at the top center of the screen.  Select "Manage Pages" from the drop-down menu.

Click on the "three dots" icon to the right of each page name and select "SEO Basics".

This will open a second section from the menu displaying the SEO Basics tab.

  1. Preview on Google shows how the page will look on a search engine results page.
  2. The URL slug is the last part of a URL and refers to a specific page.
    • For example, the slug in the example above is "gift-card".
  3. Enter the page's title tag in the field below.

  4. Enter the page's meta description in the text box below.
  5. Enter any keywords you would like associated with this page.
    • Keywords are often short, common search phrases related to your business or website.  There are many online tools that help with finding the best keywords for your page.
  6. Toggle this option to "Yes" if you would like search engines to index (include) this page.

Finally, click the blue "Save" button at the bottom of this section to update the metadata and SEO preferences for the page.

Once you are finished making any/all changes to the website, you should also click the "Save" or "Save & Publish" button in the top right corner of the page.  This will ensure that your changes will not be lost in case you navigate away from the editor.

Please note: it can several weeks for your site to be reindexed by search engines.  Click here to learn more about how long it takes for Google and other search engines to update and how to reindex your site.
