The purpose of this article is to help you understand how to:
- Create and set up a Google Analytics account
- Connect your Google Analytics account to BookingKoala
- Install tracking codes on specific pages/forms
Getting started
The setup process involves using your Google Analytics account. If you already use Google products, such as Gmail or Google Ads, then you can use the same account for Google Analytics.
If you have a Google Analytics account already, skip this first section and proceed to the section called "Create a New Property in Google Analytics".
If you don't already have an account for a Google product, first create a Google account. You don't have to use the Gmail account for anything other than signing in and out of Google Analytics.
Once you have a Google account, continue with the instructions below to create a Google Analytics account.
Create a Google Analytics Account
Then, go to this article and click the blue "Start for Free" button.
- Sign in to your Google account (if you are already logged into your account, this step will be skipped), then click "Next".
- Click on the blue "Start Measuring" button to continue with creating your account.
- Enter an Account Name and select preferences if you want to share your account data with Google. Then, click "Next".
- Enter a Property Name. A "property" represents your business's web or app data. Select your Reporting Time Zone and Currency.
- Below this section, click the blue "Show Advanced Options" link.
- Next to "Create a Universal Analytics property", toggle the button to on. Enter your website URL and check the button next to "Create both a Google Analytics 4 and a Universal Analytics property" and the box next to "Enable enhanced measurement for Google Analytics 4 property". Then, click the blue "Next" button.
- Select your Industry Category from the drop-down menu, your Business Size, and check off the boxes next to how you are looking to use Google Analytics (optional). Then, click the blue "Create" button at the bottom of the page.
- Check the box next to "I also accept the Data Processing Terms as required by GDPR" and click the "I accept" button at the bottom of the window.
- Please allow the page to load while your account is being generated. Do not refresh the page until you see a "Success" message at the top of the screen. You will then be brought into your account dashboard.
Create a New Property in Google Analytics
If you already have a Google Analytics account, you will need to create a new property.
In your Google Analytics Dashboard, click on the "Admin" icon at the bottom left corner of the side menu. Then click the blue "Create Property" button at the top center of the page.
Copy the Universal ID
Next, you will need to copy the measurement ID, or "Universal ID" so you can connect your Google Analytics account to BookingKoala. This is located in the top right corner of the Web Stream Details page that popped up once you added your new property.
To find this pop-up again, click on the data stream listed under the "Data Streams" section in the Admin column.
Click the "Copy" icon next to your measurement ID. This is located in the top right corner of the pop-up window and will always start with "G-".
Connect Your Google Analytics Account
To connect your Google Analytics Account to BookingKoala, you will use the universal tracking code you just copied. In BookingKoala, go to:
Settings > Design Forms & Website > Website Builder & Themes
Click on the orange "Customize Theme" button to open the website/theme builder.
Inside the website builder, click on "Settings" in the topmost menu. This will open a menu on the left of the page.
Switch into the "Tracking & Conversion" tab and paste the code into the box that says "Google Analytics Tracking ID".
Click the blue "Save" button at the bottom of the menu to save the code to your site. Then, click the blue "Save & Publish" button at the top right corner of the screen. This will push the tracking code live.
Please note: It can take up to 48 hours for tracking to sync data to your Google Analytics account.
Google Analytics for Embedded Forms
If you have embedded BookingKoala forms onto your website through a third-party builder like Wix, WordPress, Squarespace, etc., follow the instructions above to connect your Universal ID.
Copy the Global Site Tag
Then, you will need to add tracking codes, called "global site tags", to start tracking each page you have embedded. To locate your global site tag in Google Analytics, go to:
Admin > Data Streams
Click on your Data Stream to open the Web Stream Details page. Scroll down to the "Tagging Instructions" box and click the arrow to expand this section.
Click the "copy" icon to copy the global site tag from the box.
